Resting As A Simple Brain
Resting As A Simple Brain
Simple brain finishes work.
Good.
Now simple brain will rest.
Simple hands pick up box.
Simple eyes read ten small posts.
One person angry. One person sell thing.
One person says world ending.
One cat falls off table.
Simple brain laugh.
Then more angry person.
Then person sell thing.
Then war. Then cat.
Thirty minutes pass.
Simple brain puts box down.
Simple brain somehow more tired.
Strange.
Scroll is not always rest
Work brain reads words.
Rest brain also reads words.
Work brain decides things.
Rest brain also decides things.
Interesting?
Not interesting?
Funny? Bad? Reply? Ignore?
Next? Next? Next?
Next.
Simple brain stop doing job.
But brain did not stop processing.
This can feel like rest because view changed.
Maybe it is rest sometimes.
Funny cat can be good medicine.
But brain also needs moments where nothing new arrives.
No new opinion.
No red dot.
No stranger shouting through glowing rectangle.
Just quiet.
Quiet can feel strange.
Brain has weather
Simple brain likes plans.
Tomorrow brain will wake early.
Tomorrow brain will have energy.
Tomorrow brain will solve difficult problem before lunch.
Tomorrow brain suspiciously powerful.
Then tomorrow arrives.
Brain sleep bad.
Neighbor drills wall.
Meeting appears.
Lunch makes brain sleepy.
Birb enters window.
Plan gone.
Maybe plan was made for fantasy brain.
Fantasy brain has perfect weather every day.
Simple brain has weather.
Some morning clear. Some afternoon mud.
Some days storm.
This does not mean simple brain failed.
Weather is weather.
When brain bright, maybe do work that needs exploring.
Write first version. Solve strange problem.
Make difficult choice.
When brain dim, maybe do work with visible road.
Rename things.
Prepare tomorrow.
Simple brain cannot always choose.
Boss may put summons in best hour.
Life does not read calendar.
Still, when there are choices, work with weather instead of yelling at clouds.
Empty space is useful
Simple brain sees empty hour on calendar.
Simple brain thinks:
Excellent.
Can fit another thing.
Now calendar full.
Perfect efficiency.
Then first thing takes twenty minutes longer.
Second thing starts late.
Friend calls.
Bus stops.
Birb returns.
Day explodes.
Empty space looked wasteful.
It was not.
Empty space is good shock absorber.
Cart without shock absorber hits one hole and everybody learns flying.
Leave rooms.
Not because simple brain lazy.
World enjoys improvisation.
Bored feeling is gate
Quiet can feel uncomfortable.
Simple brain sits.
Nothing happen.
No music. No scrolls. No red dot.
Brain says:
“Check box.”
Simple brain waits.
Brain says:
“Maybe email?”
Wait.
“Weather?”
Wait.
“News?”
Brain become desperate.
Maybe this feeling does not mean something is wrong.
Maybe brain is used to candy rain.
Tiny new thing.
Tiny new things.
When rain stops, brain asks where candy went.
Wait.
Soon room becomes room again.
Tea becomes tea.
Thought has enough empty ground to land.
Sometimes old problem quietly solves part of itself.
Sometimes nothing happens.
Nothing happens is also allowed.
Wandering is not failure
Even with quiet room, good sleep, perfect plan, brain will wander.
Brain thinks about lunch.
Brain remembers embarrassing thing from years before.
Brain wonders whether fish get thirsty.
This is brain.
Problem gets worse when simple brain notices wandering and begins court.
“Bad brain.” “Lazy brain.”
“Other brain probably focus forever.”
Now brain is distracted by being angry about distraction.
Very efficient.
No need judge wig.
Notice.
Return.
That all.
Focus is not never leaving path.
Focus is coming back.
Rest is similar.
Simple brain does not need become monk.
Simple brain does not need optimize every minute.
Sometimes watch silly video.
Sometimes talk too long with friend.
Sometimes lie down and do absolutely nothing useful.
Simple brain miss the birb.
Useful is not king of whole life.
Work when working.
Rest when resting.
And when brain has bad weather, maybe be little gentler with schedule.
Simple brain carries many things.
Simple brain also needs place to put them down.
